Use water steadily
Large surges of water can overwhelm treatment and storage capacity. Repair leaking toilets and faucets, spread laundry over the week when practical, and avoid sending unnecessary water into the septic system.
Use the correct disinfection method

Inspect the disposal area
Spray heads should distribute effluent only in the permitted area and should not be broken, buried, redirected toward structures, or allowed to spray beyond the designated field. Drip systems require different inspection points but still benefit from watching for unusual wet spots or odors.
Pump based on solids—not a calendar alone
Every tank eventually accumulates material that biological treatment cannot eliminate. Household size, system design, tank capacity, food waste, and water use all affect how quickly solids build. Have sludge levels evaluated and pump before solids begin interfering with treatment or carrying over downstream.
